Drywood Termite Swarms
In our March e-newsletter, we mentioned termites were on the move and typically swarms last through April. On the west coast of Florida, Drywood termites are swarming as they thrive in the current subtropical temperatures across the region. Drywood termites differ from Subterranean termites as they do not contact the soil, instead they obtain the moisture needed to survive in the wood in which they live and feed on. They can go undetected for years until the presence of frass (termite fecal pellets), kickout holes or evidence of a swarm is observed inside the structure.
The most common areas where frass is found include attic, crawlspaces, baseboards, doorframes, interior trim and furniture. The swarmers are attracted to light and the wings are commonly found on window seals, along sliding glass doors, lamp shades, around the attic access frame or near vents in the attic. Not familiar with what a swarm looks like? We have you covered with this blog.
The best way to prevent or eliminate these types of termites is through inspection of the property at least once per year by a trained professional.
